Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the United States, and for good reasons: this procedure is capable of producing upper body symmetry, improving the size and shape of your breasts, and bringing balance to your entire frame.

Due to the many benefits offered by breast augmentation, it is not uncommon to consider the procedure at an early age. However, while breast augmentation is suitable for good candidates over the age of 18, certain age-related considerations should be made prior to committing to this procedure.

If you are considering breast augmentation in Virginia or Washington, D.C., please call New Image Plastic Surgery Associates, PLC today at (888) 730-4113 to schedule an obligation-free and cost-free consultation with Dr. Roberta Gartside.

Breast Implants

Breast tissue often continues to change even into a woman’s early to mid-20s. Due to this, the FDA has determined that women under the age of 22 can only have saline breast implants placed. There are certainly some advantages to saline implants such as their requiring a smaller incision for placement – but these implants may look and feel less like natural breast tissue, and may be more likely to produce aesthetic imperfections, particularly when placed above the muscles in the chest.

Silicone breast implants tend to look and feel more natural, even when placed above chest muscles. These implants are also less likely to ripple or wrinkle. This may make waiting until after the age of 22 for breast augmentation a better choice for some of our patients.

Our board-certified surgeon offers both saline and silicone breast implants and would be happy to help you determine which option can best help you reach your goals.

Realistic Expectations

It is important that you maintain realistic expectations of what breast augmentation can accomplish. This procedure can produce symmetry and enhance your frame, but it cannot undo deep-seated emotional dissatisfaction with your body, nor should the decision be made to please someone else. The decision to have breast augmentation is personal and must be based on your own desires.

During your free Virginia breast augmentation consultation, Dr. Gartside will listen to your goals, assess your frame, discuss your options, and help you determine if now is the best time for you to undergo this procedure.
