breast augmentation and some mastopexy (breast lift) surgeries, the type of breast implant used will be one of those options. Dr. Gartside offers both saline and silicone breast implants, and will work individually with you to help you select the type that will best help you reach your specific goals.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are filled after they have been placed. This offers two
- Size can be adjusted even after placement
- Incisions can be slightly smaller
When placed underneath the muscles in the chest, saline breast implants can produce a look and feel that is very natural. However, above the muscle placement may increase risks of implant rippling or wrinkling, along with other aesthetic imperfections that are much less common with silicone alternatives.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants, particularly gummy bear implants, look and feel like natural breast tissue even when placed above the muscles in the chest. In addition, silicone breast implants:
- May reduce risks for capsular contracture
- Are less likely to produce aesthetic imperfections such as wrinkling and double-bubble
Because they are filled prior to placement, silicone breast implants may require a larger incision, which can slightly increase surgical and recovery time. Many women find this a nonissue in comparison to the many benefits offered by this type of implant, though that is something that is best determined during your initial consultation with Dr. Gartside.
