 Guide for
Choosing a Plastic Surgeon?
Plastic surgeons who perform aesthetic and reconstructive
procedures are highly trained. Board certification requires from five to seven years
of post graduate medical training.
After completing medical school, the doctor must have thorough grounding in
general surgery ( a minimum of three years) and two to three years further study at a
plastic surgery training center approved by the Residency Review Committee in Plastic
Surgery.
Any licensed doctor may call himself a plastic surgeon.
However, the singular indication of a doctor's plastic surgery expertise is voluntary board certification.
The American Board of Plastic Surgery demands that
certified physicians pass rigorous oral and written examinations covering myriad surgical
procedures in addition to the educational background described above. Evaluated by
panels of distinguished examiners, only the highest qualified doctors are awarded Board
Certification.
