Recovery from liposuction is slightly different for each person. Factors including your body’s natural healing response, the type of liposuction you have undergone, the area or areas you have had treated, and how closely you follow pre and postoperative instructions will all play a role. During your consultation at our Reston or McLean office, Dr. Gartside can answer any questions you have about this process and help you understand what you can realistically expect during your recovery period.
To schedule your liposuction consultation with Dr. Gartside, please contact New Image Plastic Surgery Associates online or by calling 703-742-8004. Our board-certified plastic surgeon serves the DC Metro area from our two conveniently located Northern Virginia offices.
Recovery from Liposuction
Rest will be necessary for a few days following your liposuction procedure. This, combined with compression garments, can help reduce swelling and postoperative discomfort. Dr. Gartside will provide you with prescriptions for pain management when needed, but rest will have the most significant impact on your comfort.
Dr. Gartside offers advanced forms of liposuction that reduce trauma to the treatment areas. This allows most people to return to work and some normal activities within one week. Compression garments and frequent walks will assist in reducing swelling during this time. Bruising will subside on its own over the course of a few weeks.
Most patients are able to comfortably resume a majority of activities within six weeks. It is important however that you closely follow Dr. Gartside’s recommendations and only begin more progressive forms of exercise once cleared to do so. While exercise is key to maintaining your body contouring results, beginning too early can have an adverse impact on your overall health.
It can take three months for swelling to completely subside and an additional three for skin to tighten over the treatment area. Most patients see final results within this six month period, though you may see yours sooner or later depending on factors unique to your body. Dr. Gartside will work with you during your recovery period to ensure everything is progressing as normal and provide you with individualized guidance to help you maintain optimal comfort.
