Gynecomastia – enlarged male breasts – is a condition that will impact 60% of men at some point in their lives. While typically harmless, this condition can have a profound impact on self-esteem and confidence, and is often a source of embarrassment for men who struggle with it.

Drawing on nearly three decades of experience, our board-certified plastic surgeon welcomes an opportunity to meet with you, discuss your concerns, assess your condition, and help you determine if male breast reduction can help you reach your goals.

Male Breast Reduction Considerations

Gynecomastia may self-correct. As such, the condition should be present for at least 12 months before seeking male breast reduction. In addition, certain illicit drugs and prescription medications can cause gynecomastia. If you are currently using a medication that causes excess breast tissue, you will need to speak to your prescribing physician to learn if you can safely discontinue use before your procedure.

To be a good candidate for male breast reduction you should be:

  • A nonsmoker
  • In good physical and emotional health
  • Close to your goal weight
  • Able to take time off of work for a small recovery period
  • Committed to maintaining results
  • Willing to follow pre and postoperative instructions

Maintaining the results of your male breast reduction surgery will require a commitment to healthy living. This includes eating a well-balanced diet and getting at least three hours of moderate exercise every week. You can, of course, incorporate more advanced weight lifting techniques to enhance results, but maintenance alone simply requires basic forms of exercise. Dr. Gartside can discuss this with you in greater detail during your initial consultation.

Male breast reduction can restore a toned and masculine look to the chests of men who struggle with gynecomastia. If you are interested in learning if it can help you, please call our board-certified plastic surgeon at (888) 730-4110 to schedule your consultation today. Dr. Gartside maintains office locations in Reston and McLean, Virginia to better serve residents living throughout the DC Metro area.
