Mommy Makeover

Reston, Fairfax, McLean, Virginia - Washington, D.C.

The most common areas affected by pregnancy are the breasts and abdomen. Most women gain an average of 30 pounds in which the fatty tissue is stored in the hips, buttocks, breasts, thighs and abdomen. During this inevitable weight gain, this may cause the skin to stretch outside its ability to return to your pre-pregnancy shape. The breasts grow during the pregnancy to get ready for nursing and the abdomen grows as the baby develops.

The most requested procedure for a Mommy Makeover is a breast augmentation due to the shape (shrunken or sagging) of the breasts after pregnancy. The second common requested procedure is for the abdomen due to the muscles and skin loosening during pregnancy. The abdomen and breasts are the two most common areas affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding. Depending on our patient’s skin tone and elasticity of our patient’s skin after pregnancy, the best procedure may be a “tummy tuck” or simply liposuction. Since this is an elective surgery, it is important that it is done safely. The recommended time to begin researching these procedures is 3-6 months after pregnancy; this will allow our patient’s body to return as much as possible to its pre-pregnancy shape. During our patient’s initial consultation, our patient will discuss their physical goals, the reality of achieving these results and if you are a good candidate with Dr. Roberta Gartside.

Every patient is different, so the Mommy Makeover procedure varies by desired results. The breast procedure of the Mommy Makeover will elevate the breasts, areola and nipple to a youthful contour and position. This portion of the procedure will re-establish the dimension and volume of the breasts.

The abdomen procedure, depending on the laxity of the skin, commonly is performed in conjunction with liposuction and can range from a “tummy tuck” or mini abdominoplasty to a full abdominoplasty. General anesthesia is administered during these procedures. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions or address any concerns you have with the anesthetist in regards to type and amount of anesthesia to be administered for your abdomen and breast procedures.

After completion of the abdomen and breast Mommy Makeover, our patient will be closely monitored in a recovery room. It is very important that our patients take it easy after this surgery to have an effective and successful recovery. If our patient is found suitable to go home the day of their Mommy Makeover, it is strongly encouraged to arrange for a friend or relative to drive our patient home and stay with our patient for the first few days. Most patients can return to work after a few weeks but can be discussed with your plastic surgeon depending on the nature of our patient’s work. Our patient should plan on restricting their physical activity and refrain from exercise for a minimum of six weeks. Our patient will begin their follow-up visits with Dr. Roberta Gartside within a week of their surgery for a checkup and any questions or necessary drain removal. Our patient’s follow-up visits will vary by type and extent of procedures. If any questions or concerns arise during your recovery, please contact Dr. Roberta Gartside and her staff.
