American Society of Plastic Surgeons Release Latest Liposuction Data

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released their comprehensive statistical analysis of the plastic surgery world for 2017. The report shows that the plastic surgery industry as a whole saw a two percent increase over 2016 and nearly every surgical and minimally-invasive procedure also saw gains.

It’s no surprise that breast augmentation was still the number one surgical procedure, a title it’s held for nearly a decade. However, liposuction was the second-most-performed surgical procedure in 2017 and has been in the top five for the last three years. Many people have been turning to liposuction to help trim and tone their figure as they age. But what are the numbers and who’s having the procedure? According to the ASPS, liposuction numbers for 2017 show:

  • 246,354 total procedures
  • 5 percent increase over 2016
  • 89 percent of procedures performed on women
  • 39 percent of procedures performed on those aged 40-54
  • 31 percent of procedures performed in the Pacific and Mountain West regions of the U.S.

There are a few trends that doctors believe are driving the increase in liposuction procedures and plastic surgery as a whole. One such factor is the advancements in the technology and techniques used in the procedure which allows for a less painful experience and faster recovery time. Another factor is an aging population who are looking to stay competitive in the workforce by trimming their figure to look and feel younger.

At New Image Plastic Surgery and Associates, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Roberta Gartside knows everyone has their own reason for wanting liposuction. Stubborn pockets of fat can develop around the body as we age, even to those who diet and exercise regularly. She also knows that everyone’s circumstances are unique, that’s why she offers multiple liposuction techniques to address your specific needs.

At her office, she offers SmartLipo, ultrasonic liposuction, and tumescent liposuction to address fat in areas of the body, including the:

  • Abdomen, chest, and back
  • Hip and thighs
  • Love handles
  • Buttocks
  • Face (neck and jowls)
  • Arms
  • Male breast reduction (gynecomastia)

Anyone interested in the liposuction procedure should be aware that this is not intended as a weight loss solution. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that is meant to trim and tone your figure. You should already be at or near your ideal weight before undergoing this treatment. It’s also important to be in good overall health and not be suffering from any serious illnesses or diseases. Dr. Gartside will go over all of the candidacy requirements with your during your comprehensive consultation.
