facelift or facial filler

Facelift or Facial Fillers? When to Make the Switch.

Your face defines you. It is an integral part of your identity and ultimately reveals who you are by presenting the type of energy you possess. An individual with smooth, taut skin surrounding their facial structure presents themselves as youthful and fresh with vitality. On the other hand, an individual with skin that sags, with wrinkles and lines present on the forehead, cheeks and chin, among other areas, possess an image that is dull and worn out. Perhaps, you feel the latter now defines your face and are worried about the impression you give off to others.

You may have heard of facial fillers or a facelift and how they can boost your beauty by restoring your face into a more youthful appearance, but you are unsure which treatment will best suit your needs. Or maybe you have already had treatment such as a facial filler and may be wondering if it’s time to switch to a facelift.

New Image Plastic Surgery Associates of Reston, VA, offer these two exceptional treatments and want to help you decide which will best suit your needs. Please schedule a consultation to learn more about either treatment by contacting us at 703-742-8004 or visit our contact page.

What Are Facial Fillers?

Facial fillers are a treatment that restores volume loss, smooths the skin of lines and wrinkles and enhances the face’s natural contours. The minimally-invasive treatment involves injecting a filler into the face where signs of age are noticeable. Facial fillers typically consist of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body that hydrates the skin and maintains skin firmness and elasticity. The treatment produces results that are visible immediately after injection and requires little downtime. A facial filler can last for six months to two years, but how long results last depends on your body’s natural chemistry, where the treatment is performed and how many injections are utilized.

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure that can produce dramatic results by relieving the skin of lines and wrinkles and creating more youthful contours. The procedure involves removing excess skin, fat and muscle through incisions. There are various methods for a facelift, making the treatment entirely customizable to a patient’s specific concerns. The procedure produces long-lasting results. Some facelift options include:

Full Facelift

This facelift technique produces comprehensive results and treats the entire lower facial region. A full facelift is also ideal for treating deep folds along the neck. The procedure involves making extensive incisions along behind the ears and along the hairline, but scarring is not noticeable. The procedure is best suited for those with significant signs of aging.

Mini Facelift

A mini facelift improves sagging in the mid and lower facial regions. The procedure technique may be preferable for patients who need less work and want shorter incisions to be made, allowing less scarring and a shorter recovery period. The technique does not produce results as dramatic as a full facelift, so it’s best performed on patients with mild sagging of the skin. Results can last for eight to 10 years.

What Are the Differences Between a Facelift and Facial Fillers?

A facelift and facial fillers are both rejuvenating treatments that promote youthfulness by alleviating the face of age signs. But the two treatments vary vastly in what they involve, the results they produce and how long results will last. Firstly, a facelift is a much more invasive procedure than a facial filler. Facial fillers require making an injection into the face, while a facelift will require several incisions, depending on which technique is utilized. Because of this, there will be more downtime for a facelift, usually a few weeks, while a facial filler requires a few days.

While facial fillers may seem favorable because they don’t result in any scarring, the major benefit of a facelift is the long-lasting results it produces. Facial filler results typically last for six months to two years, while a facelift can last up to 10 years. Facial fillers can be performed yearly, as results gradually diminish, but they won’t create as dramatic a result as a facelift. Facial fillers can be a good stepping stone into the world of facial rejuvenation, but eventually, as wrinkles become more severe, a facelift will become the more viable procedure.

When Should You Switch From Facial Fillers to a Facelift?

Deciding to switch to a facelift can be a big decision. But certain factors may help in deciding to switch from having facial fillers to undergoing a facelift procedure. These factors include:

Your Age

Facial fillers are an excellent preventative measure or for treating mild to moderate wrinkles. The treatment is perfect for patients in their 20’s, 30’s or 40’s. On the other hand, a facelift is particularly beneficial for treating severe facial sagging and lines. Because of this, a facelift is best suited for older patients. However, certain factors can ultimately age your skin quicker, including tobacco use, genetics and frequent sun exposure. Neither of these treatments should be viewed as age-restrictive, but certain age groups may benefit more than others.

If You Have Excess Fat and Skin

Facial fillers are designed to treat noticeable wrinkles and fine lines. They are not meant to treat loose skin and tissues. Lax skin is often the result of collagen and elastin production decline, proteins that are responsible for maintaining skin firmness. These proteins decline approximately one to two percent a year when we reach our 30’s, making the skin more prone to wrinkles over time. A facelift is perfect for relieving the skin from noticeable sagging and wrinkles due to collagen decline. The procedure significantly improves sagging skin in the cheeks, neck or jawline.

You Want Longer-Lasting Results

Facial fillers are ideal if you seek to improve your look temporarily. The treatment lasts for approximately several months to a couple of years. Additionally, since most facial fillers consist of hyaluronic acid, the results can be reversed with hyaluronidase, a substance that dissolves hyaluronic acid, if you are unsatisfied with your results. A facelift will produce long-lasting dramatic results, lasting approximately 10 years. If you are interested in committing to dramatic results, then the procedure is right for you.
