Jeuveau

Growing older is inescapable, but looking your age is not. Over time, your body produces less collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid — the essential building blocks of firm, hydrated, wrinkle-free skin. This contributes to the formation of fine lines and deep creases that can make you look permanently exhausted, stressed, angry or run-down.

At New Image Plastic Surgery Associates, we offer a variety of cosmetic injectables to reverse signs of aging and restore a smooth, youthful appearance to the face. Our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Roberta Gartside has extensive experience performing these minimally-invasive treatments to help patients look as young and vibrant on the outside as they feel on the inside.

One of the most popular types of injectable relaxes wrinkles by temporarily inhibiting muscle movement. Derived from botulinum toxin type A, injectables in this category include Xeomin, Dysport and, most famously, Botox. The newest botulinum toxin type A neuromodulator to earn FDA approval is Jeuveau. Please call 703-742-8004 today to schedule a consultation and find out why Jeuveau has earned the nickname “Newtox.” We serve patients in Reston, Fairfax and McLean, Virginia, as well as the Washington D.C. area.

What Is Jeuveau?

Lines that develop as a result of repetitive muscle movements are called dynamic wrinkles. Your face contains dozens of muscles that contract when you chew, speak, laugh, frown and make other facial expressions. The skin above a moving muscle may also contract, causing a dynamic wrinkle to appear. At first, dynamic wrinkles relax when the underlying muscle relaxes, but over many years of making the same expressions, the lines can become deeply ingrained in your skin and visible even when your face is at rest.

Jeuveau takes its name from the French word “nouveau,” which means “modern” or “up-to-date.” It is developed from a bacterium-produced toxin that has been approved for use as a cosmetic injectable by the FDA. When the toxin is injected into a muscle, it prevents the muscle from contracting and creating expression lines in the skin. This stops wrinkles from appearing in the moment while simultaneously preventing them from carving deeper and more permanently into the skin.

Benefits of Jeuveau

While the basic mechanism of all wrinkle-relaxing injectables is the same, each product has a unique formula and is intended for use in different areas of the body. Jeuveau is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe vertical frown lines between the eyebrows, also known as “11 lines” or “glabellar lines.” Unlike Botox, which has numerous medical applications, Jeuveau is dedicated exclusively to aesthetics.

The advantages of Jeuveau and our other injectables include:

  • Minimally-invasive facial rejuvenation
  • Highly customizable to the patient’s anatomy and goals
  • Convenient in-office treatments
  • Short appointments that can fit into a lunch break
  • Minimal discomfort during and after treatment
  • No downtime
  • Long-lasting results
  • Can be combined with other procedures

Jeuveau vs. Botox

Jeuveau and Botox are both made from botulinum toxin type A and both work by temporarily immobilizing muscles. However, they are derived from different strains of the toxin. Botox is onabotulinumtoxinA and is manufactured by Allergan. Jeuveau is prabotulinumtoxinA and is manufactured by Evolus. The benefits associated with each product are similar, as are the risks and potential side effects. Neither neuromodulator is necessarily better than the other, but one may be better for a specific patient due to factors like affordability or longevity.

Jeuveau vs. Xeomin

Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA) is a neuomodulator manufactured by Merz Aesthetics. Like Botox and Jeuveau, it temporarily softens wrinkles by blocking the release of chemicals that cause muscle contractions. What sets Xeomin apart from similar injectables is the manufacturing method. Xeomin undergoes a purification process that removes proteins from the formula, leaving behind “naked” toxin molecules. The benefit of this purer form is that the body may be less likely to develop antibodies to Xeomin. With continued use, some patients build up a tolerance for Botox and Jeuveau, and these products becomes less effective for them over time. For these patients, Xeomin may be a better option.

Candidates for Jeuveau

You may be a candidate for treatment with Jeuveau if you have moderate to severe frown lines between your eyebrows and are looking for a nonsurgical solution. We encourage anyone considering Jeuveau or another injectable to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gartside. During your consultation, let Dr. Gartside know:

  • If you have any current medical concerns
  • If you have a medical condition that affects your muscular or nervous system
  • If you are allergic to any of Jeuveau’s ingredients
  • If you are taking any medications
  • If you have used neuromodulators in the past and experienced side effects
  • If you are pregnant or nursing

Dr. Gartside is an experienced plastic surgeon who is committed to providing each of her patients with the safest and most effective options. She will discuss your candidacy for Jeuveau injections in greater detail during your initial consultation and, if necessary, will recommend a more appropriate alternative.

Is Jeuveau Safe?

To date, Jeuveau has been studied in over 2,100 patients across five clinical studies. Side effects are rare but may include the following:

  • Infection
  • Headache
  • Eyelid drooping
  • Nausea
  • Allergic reaction
  • Muscle weakness

No serious drug-related adverse events were observed in the studies. Having Jeuveau administered in hygienic conditions by a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Gartside significantly reduces any risks.

What to Expect During Treatment

Treatment with Jeuveau, like other cosmetic injectables, is a quick procedure that does not require anesthesia. Patients who are concerned about pain or discomfort can have a topical anesthetic applied before Jeuveau administered. Once the treatment area is prepared and the optimal injection locations have been identified, the product is injected using an ultra-fine needle. A treatment generally takes only 10-20 minutes to complete.

There is typically no downtime associated with Jeuveau injections. Although you may experience minor bruising, swelling, tenderness or redness, these effects are usually mild and do not interfere with the ability to resume regular activities.

Jeuveau Results

Following treatment with Jeuveau, you will not see results immediately. The product needs time to take effect and reach its full potency. Muscle movement begins to diminish within a few days and you will notice a gradual smoothing of the creases between your brows until full results are reached. Jeuveau lasts three to four months on average before another treatment is required. To maintain your results, Dr. Gartside will repeat treatment as necessary, making any adjustments to the dosage or technique that are needed to ensure you continue getting beautiful, natural results.
