Silicone Vs. Saline Breast Implants

One of the breast augmentation options you will be given by Fairfax plastic surgeon Dr. Roberta Gartside is the type of breast implants used in your procedure. Both saline and silicone breast implants offer different benefits and neither one is ideal for each patient. During your initial breast augmentation consultation, Dr. Gartside will carefully assess your frame, discuss your options, and help you choose the breast implant best suited to meet your particular needs.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with a sterile salt-water solution after they have been placed. This allows Dr. Gartside to make a smaller incision for their placement, which may reduce both surgical and recovery time.

Saline implants tend to feel less like natural breast tissue and, when placed above the muscles in the chest, are more prone to aesthetic imperfections. This is much less of an issue when saline implants are placed submuscularly.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants are filled prior to placement, requiring a larger incision for their insertion. A larger incision may increase surgical and recovery time, and may also produce a slightly more noticeable scar. However, as a skilled and board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Gartside takes every care to minimize scars regardless of implant type.

Silicone implants tend to look and feel more like natural breast tissue, making them ideal for both over and under the muscle placement. In addition, silicone implants are less likely to suffer aesthetic imperfections such as rippling and wrinkling.
