Virginia Breast Augmentation Questions: Will Breast Implants Interfere With Mammograms?
If you are considering breast augmentation in Virginia, there are a number of things you will want to keep in mind. Among these will be the impact your breast implants have on breast cancer detection through mammography.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon and a breast cancer survivor, Dr. Roberta Gartside understands the important role mammograms play in a woman’s health. During your free Virginia breast augmentation consultation she will be happy to address any concerns you may have.
Breast Implant Placement
As a general rule, breast augmentation can interfere with mammograms, but does not make detecting cancer more difficult. So long as you are upfront with your OB/GYN about your breast implants, alternative testing can be provided to detect suspicious lumps or growths.
In addition, breast implant placement will play a role in what types of breast cancer detection are best for you. Implants placed below the muscles in your chest (submuscular) are less likely to interfere with mammograms because they do not displace natural breast tissue. However, even with submuscular implants it is always a good idea to work with a doctor who is experienced at providing exams to women with implants.
