What To Consider Before a Labiaplasty

labiaplasty plastic surgery reston mcclean virgina washington dcIf you have aesthetic and/or physical issues with your labia, you may have thought about having a labiaplasty. At New Image Plastic Surgery, we understand considering a plastic surgery procedure in such an intimate area can be intimidating. Our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Roberta Gartside is one of the only female plastic surgeons in all of Virginia and she works to cultivate a comfortable environment in which you can feel safe communicating your concerns and desired outcome.

If you’ve considered this procedure it’s important to know that you’re not alone. In a recent report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there was a 39% increase in labiaplasty procedures in 2016, with over 12,000 procedures performed in the U.S.

How Labiaplasty Can Help

Understanding what a labiaplasty does is the first step in deciding if it’s the right procedure for you. Labiaplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that corrects issues with the inner and outer lips of the labia. This procedure can correct issues of shape, size, and asymmetry between the inner and outer labia. Many women consider this treatment to address issues of:

  • Discomfort during exercise or physical activity
  • Poor sexual stimulation
  • Physical irritation from labia projection
  • Issues with hygiene
  • Embarrassment from wearing tight fitting bathing suits or clothes
  • Emotional distress with intimate partner

As you can see, there are many reasons why women may want to correct the size or shape of their labia. The physical and emotional discomfort can place undue strain on your life. Whether you avoid participating in certain activities or experience problems in a relationship, labial issues can be a burden that changes how you act and feel.

Is Labiaplasty Right for You?

Because she’s a female plastic surgeon, Dr. Gartisde is in a unique position in that she understands how sensitive this subject can be. During your consultation, she’ll listen to your concerns, answer any questions you may have as thoroughly as possible, and explain what options may be best for your specific situation. Our goal at New Image Plastic Surgery is to help those who come to us to look and feel confident because we believe everyone deserves to feel their best.

During your consultation, Dr. Gartside will perform a thorough evaluation of your current health and medical history to determine your eligibility. As with any surgical procedure, and especially a labiaplasty, it’s important to understand that not everyone is a candidate. We don’t wish to exclude anyone who desires to improve themselves, but ensuring the health and safety of each patient is our top priority.

While most adult women will be eligible for this procedure, there are some factors that can exclude you from candidacy. The best candidates for this procedure include:

  • Those in good overall health
  • Those whose body is fully developed
  • Those who are not on certain medications such as blood thinners or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Those who don’t drink or smoke regularly

Dr. Gartside will go over all of this with you during your comprehensive consultation. In some cases, she may ask that you refrain from smoking or drinking, as well as taking certain medications prior to your procedure. It’s also important to understand that this surgery is not meant to improve sexual pleasure. If that is your goal, Dr. Gartside can talk to you about other treatments that may help you.
